Eastern Region  Police officers participate in tree planting exercise

Police officers from Eastern Region Police Headquarters last Friday, March 5th  participated in a tree planting exercise surrounding the regional office premises.
They were led by Senior Superintendent Newton Mathanga who is the Regional Operations Officer for Eastern Region Police. During the exercise, over 100 trees have been planted.
"As Police officers, we also have a role to play in ensuring that our surroundings are well preserved and this is why today we are participating in this tree planting exercise." Said Mathanga.
He added that apart from beautifying the country trees are very important for fresh air, source of medicine, as well as food. Mathanga further said, as a security agency, their job sometimes requires to work undercover where trees provide shelter and security.
He further urged the officers to play a role also in ensuring that the planted trees are well taken care of in order to survive.
According to Sergeant Tionge Kayenda, Assistant Public Relations Officer for Eastern Region, the officers have also been urged not to spare anyone found in possession of charcoal as well as trafficking charcoal without a permit for it is against the law in as far as Forest Act is concerned.
