World Celebrates Mandela Day

Nelson Mandela

Mandela was born on 18 July 1918 in the village of Mvezo in Umtata,
He was a South African anti-apartheid revolutionary, political leader, and philanthropist who served as the first black president of South Africa from 1994 to 1999 after spending 27 years in jail.


Mr. Mandela, who died in 2013 at the age of 95, is remembered as one of the greatest leaders in the world.


In November 2009, the United Nations created the Mandela day also known as Nelson Mandela International Day which is held every year on the 18th of July, the day which also marks Mandela’s birthday was created to honour his achievements.
According to the United Nations, everyone has the ability and the responsibility to change the world for the better and Mandela day is an occasion for all to take action and inspire change.


This year the Nelson Mandela Foundation has launched a new Mandela Day strategy, titled: Mandela Day: The Next Chapter, to mark the tenth anniversary of the initiative.
In the next 10 years, the foundation plans to mobilize people, nations and  civil society organisations to focus on 5 areas namely: Education and literacy, Food and Nutrition, Shelter, Sanitation and active Citizenship.
