The Ministry of Education has unveiled plans to recruit 4,200 Auxiliary Teachers for a one-year contract under the Malawi Education Reform Programme (MERP).
According to Secretary for Education, Dr. Mangani Chilala Katundu, the Auxiliary Teachers (ATs) will be drawn from the Initial Primary Teacher Education (IPTE) cohorts 14, 15, and 16.
“This initiative is part of our ongoing efforts to bolster the education sector and ensure that every pupil has access to qualified teachers,” Dr. Katundu stated.
In an interview, Ministry of Education Public Relations Officer Mphatso Nkuonera highlighted the significance of this recruitment drive.
“The engagement of Auxiliary Teachers forms part of the government’s strategy to reduce the pupil-to-qualified-teacher ratio across the country,” said Nkuonera.
Furthermore, Nkuonera disclosed a significant increase in the honorarium for the auxiliary teacher positions.
“We are pleased to announce that the honorarium has been adjusted by 50 percent, from K80,000 to K120,000 per person per month. This increase reflects our commitment to adequately compensate our educators for their invaluable contributions,” he added.
This recruitment drive marks a substantial step towards enhancing the quality of education in Malawi, aiming to provide better learning conditions for pupils nationwide.
