In a statement issued on 14th July, MEC Chief elections officer Sam Alfandika warned that MCP will be held responsible for any loss of life for MEC staff or lawyers or damage to property in the course of MEC‘s preparation for a Constitutional Court case hearing on July 29th.
MCP publicity Secretary the Rev. Maurice Munthali alleged in a statement that some district commissioners were working with MEC to coerce presiding officers and other stakeholders to sign what he termed the Clandestine results sheets in exchange for money.
But Alfndika disputed the allegation, branding the remarks as a misleading and malicious statement that can incite hatred and unkindness towards MEC staff.
Meanwhile some members of the community in Kasungu District chased Malawi Electoral Commission officials and Lawyers when they wanted to collect signatures of presiding officers for the May 21 Tripartite elections.
MEC lawyers and staff are meeting the presiding officers to prepare for affidavits for the ongoing presidential court case involving the commission and Malawi Congress party with UTM which are Challenging presidential elections results.
Kasungu Police Spokesperson, Harry Namwaza, confirmed the development but he was quick to say the situation was contained and nobody was harmed.
The scuffle came barely a day after MCP issued a statement warning MEC to stop collecting the signatures.
Reacting to the scuffle, MEC spokesperson, Sangwani Mwafulirwa, said the incident was unfortunate, and blaming it on the statement which MCP issued.
Howe ever MCP Spokesperson Maurice Munthali on 14th said they would not withdraw the statement.
