Opening the Global Disability Forum today at the Bingu International Convention Center in Lilongwe, Minister of Gender, Community Development and Social Welfare Jean Sendeza emphasized, “The economic and social costs of excluding persons with disabilities are substantial. Inclusive actions in education and healthcare are essential to address this issue.”
Organized by World Vision International, the forum runs from July 15th to 19th and aims to advance the rights and inclusion of persons with disabilities, attracting participants from around the world.
Sendeza highlighted the significant challenges faced by persons with disabilities due to their exclusion from national development processes. She stressed the need to involve persons with disabilities in planning and to make information accessible, aligning with global frameworks like the UNCRPD and Malawi’s 2063 Vision.
World Vision’s Director of Operations, Charles Chimombo, underscored the forum’s role in fostering learning and collaboration.
“This platform will allow Malawians to build networks and promote collaboration to address the challenges faced by persons with disabilities,” he noted.
The forum has gathered officials from countries including Lesotho, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Mozambique, South Africa, the USA, and New Zealand.
Participants are encouraged to share their expertise and work together to ensure no one is left behind, aiming for a future where everyone, regardless of ability, can thrive and contribute to societal goals.
