Over 6 million Malawians are at risk of being affected by hunger this year which has been persuade by flooding and dry spells that the country faced during the last growing season. This came as a report from the Catholic Development Commission, CADECOM, in Salima, during a two day workshop meant for Journalist from different media houses, which started on 15th July 2016, where the Church’s charity arm urged the media to support the development of resilience policies that are of help in the elimination of hunger by raising the awareness of the policies.
CADECOM National Programs Coordinator, Usufu Mkungula said that the absence of these policies is causing stakeholders to work without proper guidance hence the need for Government to address the policies.
“As it is of now the National Agriculture Policy is in draft form while the right to food bill is being revised and it has been renamed to Food and Nutrition bill,” Mkungula said.
Nkungula also added that the National Disaster Risk Management was approved last year but its implementation is yet to be done.
Precious Msosa, one of the participants from Mkwaso newspaper, said that the workshop has enlightened journalists on the resilience policies and this will help in effective reporting.
CADECOM is the development arm of the Episcopal conference of Malawi and is implementing the project which is aiming at increasing food security in Malawi targeting 1250 households.
